Microbial properties of three Bulgarian paddy soils and relationships to soil resiliency

The microbiological characteristics of three Bulgarian paddy soils were compared to determine if there were differences and the possibility that these measurements could be related to changes in soil resiliency. Few differences were found in the number of bacteria, fungi, and actinomycetes. Among the aerobic N2-fixers enumerated, Azospirillum, Bacillus and Azotobacter sp. were the predominant groups. The organic matter content of the soils is low. The microbial biomass carbon varied from 222.5 to 384.4 kg per ha. Biomass C to total C ratio varied from 1.03 to 2.2 percent. Potential nitrogen fixed varied from 1.75 to 3.78 kg N fixed per ha which is quite low. There was correlation among N2-fixation and CO2 production, total soil C and CO2 production, microbial biomass and CO2 production, N2-fixation and total soil C, total soil C and biomass C, and N2 fixation and biomass C. It is proposed that these measurements will correlate with changes in soil resiliency.
