Egg development and nymphal emergence of Kraussaria angulifera Krauss (Orthoptera: Acrididae) in relation to rainfall in the Sudan savannah of Nigeria

The effect of rainfall on egg development and time of nymphal emergence of a grasshopper pest, Kraussaria angulifera Krauss was investigated at Kano in the Sudan savannah of Nigeria. Egg-pods of the grasshopper were placed in sandy soil contained in polythene bags and exposed to rain showers. Minimum amount of rainfall observed to cause egg development and nymphal emergence was 78.2 mm. Ambient temperature ranges during the period of egg development (April-July) were 28.7 more or less 7.0 degrees, 28.6 more or less 7.6 degrees and 29.1 more or less 7.1 degrees respectively for 1992, 1993 and 1994. Nymphs emerged in 69-73 days. Application of insecticide dust on the soil surface around the bases of trees and shrubs (egg bed of the grasshopper) in the infested area about 69 days from the first heavy rain (about 7 mm) of the season was considered a possible control measure for the grasshopper nymphs.
