Over three hundred bacteria and yeasts, obtained from the carposphere of citrus fruits, were screened for evaluating their activity against green and blue mould, incited respectively by Penicillium digitatum and Penicillium italicum. The screening led to the selection of one bacterial isolate (B OR 7/17) showing, when applied at 100 million-1 milliard cells per ml and at least one hour before the pathogens, a satisfactory biocontrol activity, on citrus fruits artificially wounded and inoculated with the two pathogens. Its biocontrol activity was consistent both at 22 degrees and under refrigeration conditions. The isolate was able to grow in the presence of high concentrations of benzimidazole fungicides.
