Globalization of the seed industry: current situation and evolution

The estimated value of internal commercial seed markets for the world's top sixteen countries ranges between 4,500 million US dollars for the USA and 300 million dollars for the Netherlands. These sixteen countries represent more than two thirds of the world's commercial seed market. The ten largest seed companies in the world have a total turnover of 4.33 billion US dollars, but this represents only 15 % of the total world commercial seed market, proving that the international seed market is very fragmented. The value of international trade in seed is estimated at 2.9 billion US dollars, 1.9 billion dollars of which is for agricultural crops. Globally the most important products are maize, vegetable, flower, herbage and beet seeds. International seed trading is increasing, but within-Europe trading accounts for 45 % of this global exchange. Trade in the future may be restricted by government regulations (replacing tariff barriers), national listing, regulations for genetically modified organisms, and failure to protect intellectual property
