[Planting density in the row: effects on grape yield and quality. A trial with Merlot in the Ticino]

In order to study the influence of planting density in the row on grape yield and quality, a trial with Merlot grape was set up on narrow terraces in the experimental vineyard of Gudo (Ticino). Four spacings were compared: 75 and 95 cm with vines pruned as simple Guyot, 115 and 135 cm with vines pruned as double Guyot. Spacing between the rows was kept constant (2.35 m) for all treatments, as well as the number of shoots per running meter (8.5). Over ten years planting density in the row did not markedly influence productivity and the quality of the must and wine. Increased spacing slightly reduced the vegetative development, but in all experimental variants a single closed canopy was formed in the available room. Therefore, the ratio of the exposed leaf surface per kg of grapes remained constant. This explains undoubtedly the poor effect of planting density in the row on the quality of the grapes. Reducing the length of the fruit bearing cane favoured the regularity of bud bursting
