The range of apple rootstock cultivars is widening with the occurrence of numerous recent releases. Virus-free (VF) M9 clones are divided into "weak" (NAKB T338, Lancep), with a mean vigour of 5-15 % higher than the virus tested control M9, and "strong" (EMLA, Burgmer 984), which induce a difference of up to 25-30 %. Apart from the M9 range, the rootstocks Budagovski 9 and P22 are of interest, owing to their vigour (being adapted to high density plantings, from 2000 to more than 3000 trees/ha) and good agronomic performance. The M20 type is of more ancient origin. Its vigour level is about the same as that of the M27 rootstock, but it shows more regularity in the orchard and produces larger fruits
