Between 1990 and 1995 nutrition physiology and feed evaluation were the two major topics in pig nutrition research in Europe. Germany, Great Britain, France, The Netherlands, and Denmark together contributed with 75 % to the total scientific output. The main emphasis was on improved feed knowledge, nutritional requirements, meat quality considering dietary fat quality, control of nitrogen excretion on the farm level and thus reduced pollution, and orientation towards more precise physiological studies. The weak points were the dissipation of research teams and channels for the diffusion of results. The present direction of research will be maintained. The main emphasis will be on reducing production costs (feeds and additives) and deepening the knowledge in physiology, the pig being increasingly used as a model for man. Intensified co-operation between research teams could improve the efficiency of human resources and means
