The effect of some factors on the thickness of aspen leaves

The structure and different characteristics of aspen leaves were analysed during field studies in 1986-1989, 1991 and 1994 in middle-aged aspen stands. The field study was carried out both in thinned stands and in a control plot. The increase in leaf thickness was detected after thinning in the lower two thirds of the crowns, especially during first year. At the same time we cannot assert that the thickness of aspen leaves had increased significantly. The fresh weight of a leaf does not depend on the placement of the leaves in the crown. The change in a dry matter content has a smooth shape. The dry matter content is less in the 3-4th crown layer. The thinning of a stand does not influence the thickness of leaves. Although the leaves collected from thinned stands are slightly thicker compared to unthinned area the differences are not statistically significant. The specific leaf weight is heavily influenced by the weather conditions of the particular year of investigation
