Scientific and technological developments and the ensuing progress in agriculture and industry are usually accompanied by a dramatic increase in the demand of natural resources and an ever growing impact on the surrounding environment. Our society is faced with the increasingly difficult task of satisfying industrial and agricultural needs while ensuring a sound use of natural resources.
