Fertility of Horro and crossbred cows at Bako Research Center

The fertility of Horro and their crosses with Jersey, Friesian and Simmental exotic breeds was studied at Bako Research Center using ten years data, 1978 through to 1987. Fertility was estimated using service, conception, calving, abortion and non-return rate. The result indicated out of 4673 oestruses (1727 from Horro and 2946 from crossbred cows) detected the service, conception, calving and abortion rate were 36 percent, 41.5 percent, 93 percent and 7 percent respectively. Breed effect on these parameters was not significant (P greater than 0.05). The effect of month and year in which oestrus was detected and cows bred on fertility were also studied. Month significantly (p less than 0.05) affected calving rate. However, year had a significant (p less than 0.05) effect on service, conception and calving rate. The non-return rates to the first, second, third fourth and fifth services were 30.24 percent, 9.6 percent 6.45 percent, 2.2 percent and 0.9 percent respectively. Breed variation in the non return rate was not significant. Sixty four percent of the cows in oestrus was not served. The problems were associated with the cow (31.9 percent), the bull (5.8 percent) and environment (62.9 percent). It can be concluded that although accurate oestrus detection is a prerequisite for successful breeding, timely breeding or insemination is important for high service and conception rate. Therefore, effort has to be to inseminate and breed as many cows as possible by minimizing environment factors affecting service and conception. Conception rate is also influenced by the fertility of the bull. Therefore, bull management has to be geared towards producing healthy and fertile bull in order to improve the overall fertility of the herd.
