The prediction of the rate of protein retention by an animal given its treatment, is the critical first step in any model of pig growth. Recent researches show that protein retention (PR) is predicted as PR=ep.(IPI-MP) kg/day, where ep is the efficiency of retaining ideal protein, IPI is the ideal protein intake (kg/day) and MP is the maintenance requirement for ideal protein.
