Possibilities for reducing game damages by appropriate scheduling and execution of tending procedures in reafforested stands

In the framework of our experiments the following were investigated: Will reduction or omission of tending contribute to conserving reafforested stands from browsing damages? - To what extend can young plants tolerate becoming overrun by weeds or being suppressed by the sprouts of shrubs and trees? For the purposes of our investigations, in woodlot exposed to browsing of various degree six parcels were marked out. At the latter places tending procedures were reduced and browsing damages recorded. The experiments were carried out with pedunculate oak (Quercus robur), sessile oak (Quercus pertaea) and Norway Spruce (Picea abies) in the climate zone of prairie forests, hornbeam-oak and beech woods. On the basis of results obtained, it can be regarded as proven that in stands where it is allowed by the given circumstances the extend of browsing damages becomes significantly reduced by reasonably scheduled tending. In respects to the growth of samplings, under the circumstances present in our experiments reduction or omission of tending procedures has led to no regression at all or only to one of minimum degree
