Differing soil properties in the root zones of plant species growing on sand and loess steppes

A study of the soils three sand steppes and two loess steppes indicated that the pH, humus quality and readily soluble nutrient concentration of the soil differed significantly in the root zones of various plant species. Festuca, for instance, is found on more acidic soil with a lower soluble Ca content and a higher soluble Fe content than Fumana. In the root zone of Alyssum the soluble Al content of the soil was ten times greater than that in the neighbourhood of Fumana.
