The sustainability or otherwise of differently managed systems can be demonstrated using result from long-term experiments at Rothamsted and Woburn. Examples are given of the effects on crop yield of increasing acidity and of soil organic matter. The influence of SOM, soil-borne pathogens and cultivar are also discussed in relation to fertilizer N efficiency
