Effect of different levels of expeller sunflower seed meal in broiler diets

This experimental was conducted to study the effect of different levels of dehulled sunflower seed meal (expeller) in grower and finisher diets for broiler chicks. Ross meat type chicks were used in this study. All chicks one day old were fed a starter diet up to 19 days of age. From 19-45 days of age the feed was changed to the experimental diets. Four experimental diets were formulated and used. The control diet contained 20 percent solvent extracted soybean meal, while expeller sunflower seed meal (SFM) was added to the other diets at the expense of soybean meal in the following replacement ratios: 25, 50 and 75 percent (5, 10 and 15 percent of the diet). The criteria of response were weekly chick body weight, growth rate, body weight gain, feed consumption, feed conversion and slaughter test at the end of experiment. The results are summarized as follows: Regarding the entire period of study (19-45 days of age), body weight, growth rate, body weight gain and feed consumption of birds. Feed conversion of birds fed higher level of expeller sunflower seed meal was slightly worse than that of birds in the control group but the differences were not significant. Regarding to carcass components, significant differences were observed among treatments, in liver, gizzard and giblets percentages, but in abdominal fat and dressing percentage, the differences were not significant. It can be concluded that 50 percent of soybean meal could be replaced with expeller sunflower meal in grower and finisher diets of broiler chicks without adverse effect on broiler performance or carcass traits
