Effect of water sources acidity on seed growth of cataloupe (Cucumis melo (L) Naud)

The experiment was conducted at glasshouse of Plant Pathology Department, Bogor Research Institute for Food Crops (240 m a.s.l.). Jiffy Pelet (pH 5.8) was used as germination media which placed in plastic box (31x24x5 cm) covered with a transparant plastic paper. A completely randomized design was used ranged and the following treatments were tried : a. artecis water (pH 4.5-5.0), b. ground water (pH 5.5-6.0), c. tap water (pH 6.8-7.0), and upgraded pH water (with CaCO3) up to pH 7.5. The result showed that one day after water application, the acidity of the media changed up to a. pH 5.5, b. pH 6.1, c. pH 6.5 and d. pH 7.0 for the artecis water, ground water, tap water and upgraded pH water respectively. The best plant growth was performed by plants which grew in normal acidity media (pH +-6.5). The average of the percentage of plant growth after 18 days was 72 percent, average of leaf number per plant was 4.05 leafs, and the average of the plant at 20 days was 17.05 cm
