Selection for femaleness of cucumber (Cucumis sativus)

The trial was done from July till November 1989 in Sukamandi, using a randomized block design of 61 cultivars and 2 replications. Cucumber belong to the Cucubirtaceae family, the flowers being trumpet shaped. The crop is monocecious. The female flowers, unlike the male ones, posses a spindle like gynoceium under neath the perianth. Selection on femaleness resulted LV-1100 gave the higher female flower (11.0) per branche than the other. These number to be excellent for breeding work, because very short selflife (2 days) and their fruit size were smallest
