Intercropping between upland rice and stilo (Stylosanthes guyanensis Abul.) to produce forage

The experiment was conducted at the Experimental Farm of Maros Research Institute for Food Crops in South Sulawesi. A randomized block design in factorial experiment was used with four replications. Treatment of cropping system divided into : 1. rice as monocrop, and 2. intercropping between upland rice and stilo. Pruning system divided into : 1. without pruning; 2. pruning at 30 days after sowing (das); 3. pruning at 45 das; 4. pruning at 60 das; 5. pruning at 30 and 45 das; 6. pruning at 30 and 60 das; 7. pruning at 45 and 60 das; 8. pruning at 30, 45, and 60 das. The height of pruning is 10 cm at 30 das; 15 cm at 45 das; and 20 cm at 60 das. Plant height of rice at 45, 75 das, and during harvest was not affected by cropping system, but significantly affected by pruning system at 60 das. Pruning demonstrated a significant effect on plant height of rice as evidenced by the significant lower of plant heighgt as compared to the control during harvest. Pruning also extended the harvest period of rice. Treatment of simply pruning at 60 das decreased grain yield of rice 5.5 percent, eventhough not significantly different from control. Pruning system affected the yield of forage. Simply pruning at 60 das yielded 33.88 t forage/ha, significantly higher than those of other pruning treatments. Intercropping system yielded rice straw higher 14.23 percent than that of monoculture. The same is true for crude protein, which was higher 37.27 percent
