Canopy modification on protein content of seeds, fresh fodder production and yield of corn

A field experiment was conducted to determine the effects of canopy modification treatments on protein content of seeds, fresh fodder production, yield and yield components of corn at Cikeumeuh Sub Station during the 1991 dry season (May to August). It was a randomized complete block design with four replications and six canopy modification treatments, namely; a. D1 (no canopy modification), b. D2 (removal of all the leaves below the ear at 10 days after 50 percent silking), c. D3 (removal of all the leaves below the ear at 10 days after 50 percent silking), d. D4 (removal of all the leaves above the ear at 20 days after 50 percent silking), e. D5 (detasseling before pollen shedding) and f. D6 (detopping above the ear 20 days after 50 percent silking). The plot size was 9 x 6 m, consisting of 12 rows, 6 meters long. Plant spacing was 75 x 25 cm, one plant per hill. Three hundred kg urea, 100 kg TSP and 50 kg KCl/ha were applied. The result showed that there was no significant effect of canopy modification treatments on protein content of seeds, while protein content of fresh fodder was significantly affected. There was strong effects of canopy treatments on grain yield and yield components. Plant detasseled before pollen shedding (D5) significantly out yielded (4.0 t/ha) the control (3.6 t/ha). However, D4 and D6 treatments did not significantly differ from the control but D2 and D3 treatments significantly lowered grain yield about 30 percent and 25 percent compared to control, respectively
