This study aimed at (1) searching for the appropriate way of quantitatively and qualitatively describing the canopy structure of gazed swards from a viewpoint of animal grazing, and (2) establishing a technique for this. A preliminary measurement was made in a Pensacola bahiagrass pasture grazed by beef cattle. Two descriptions of the canopy structure were presented; (1) the spatial distribution of canopy components with their in vitro dry matter digestibilities, and (2) the herbage mass across the digestibility classes. Effectiveness of the present technique in understanding the grazing of sward canopy by animals and in constructing a mechanistic model of the interaction between sward canopy and grazing animals was discussed. Further, the sample amount, time and labor required for the accurate determination of the digestibility were estimated
