Translocation and distribution of 13C-photosynthates in "Fujiminoru" grapevines [Vitis] as influenced by different rootstocks

Berry growth, and sugar and anthocyanin contents were compared in "Fujiminori" grapes (Vitis vinifera x V. labruscana) grafted on eight different rootstocks: V. riparia X V. rupestris 3309, 3306 and 101-14, V. berlandieri x V. riparia Teleki 5 BB, 5 C and 8 B, and V. berlandieri x v. riparia SO.4 and 420 A. Tow-year-old vines of 5 BB stock and 4-year-old vines of each of the other stocks were grown in plastic containers. Berry growth was more vigorous in vines grafted on 5 BB, 3306, and 420 A than on 8 B, SO.4, and 101-14 stocks. The highest level of total soluble solids (TSS) in the juice was observed in vines grafted on 8 B, followed in order by those on 5 BB, SO.4, and 3306, whereas berries of vines grafted on 101-14 had the lowest TSS contents. Berries of vines grafted on 5 C had the highest anthocyanin in the skin followed in descending order by 3306, 8 B, SO.4, 3309, 420 A, 5 BB, and 101-14. Translocation of photosynthates from leaves into the various parts of the plant was investigated in "Fujiminori" grapes grafted on 3306, 5 BB, 101-14, and SO.4 stocks, which were exposed to 13CO2 at veraison and at ripening stages of berry development. Regardless of the time of treatments. At both stage, 13C translocated into berries was highest in vines grafted on 3306 followed by 5 BB and SO.4, whereas it was lowest in berries of vines grafted on 101-14, especially at the ripening stage. At 120h after feeding, 13C content in berries was three times higher in vines grafted on 3306 than in those grafted on 101-14 at both stages. The highest distribution ratio of 13C photosynthates in the berries was in vines grafted on 3306 at veraison and on SO.4 at ripening stage.
