Clay mineral compositions of Akahoya soils under the different drainage conditions

Clay mineral compositions of Akahoya soils under the different drainage conditions, collected from Kawaminami in Miyazaki prefecture, south Kyushu, Japan, were investigated to know the relationship between the drainage condition with the weathering and the clay mineralogical properties of Akahoya soils. The results obtained were as follows. 1) Clay contents were the highest in akahoya soil under well-drained conditions, while the lowest content of clay were found in that soils under poorly-drained condition. In this fact it was suggested that the weathering of Akahoya soils were developed under the well-drained conditions. But in poorly-drained condition, the well development of Akahoya's weathering can not be proceeded. 2) All Akahoya soils contained large amount of allophane and imogolite, allophane-like constituent and small amount of montomorillonite and montomorillonite (or vermiculite) -chlorite intergrades. A small amount of illite and kaolinite were also found in most of Akahoya soils. 3) Large amount of halloysite were found in the Akahoya soils under poorly-drained condition in which the silica was especially accumulated
