[Yield, digestibility in vitro and protein content of crop residues of maize hybrids]

This study was conducted to investigate differences among maize hybrids for stover yield, in vitro dry matter digestibility (DMD) and crude protein (CP) content of the stover parts (leaf, husk and stem) and cob, and to determine the correlation among these traits and grain yield. Twenty-five hybrids were planted at Chapingo, Mexico (three plots/hybrid), and harvested after the physiological maturity of grain. Plant samples were separated into their parts and each part was analyzed for DMD and CP. The genetic variance (Vg) was estimated as a proportion of the total variance (Vt). Significant differences were found among hybrids for both the stover yield components and the qualitative traits studied. Stem represented from 40 to 57 percent of the stover, leaf from 31 to 44 percent and husk from 6 to 20 %. Leaf had the highest CP content, while husk was the most digestible part, although husk CP content was lower than that of leaf and cob. Differences among hybrids were observed in DMD of stem and cob, but only for stem in digestible dry matter yield. El objetivo de este trabajo fue estudiar diferencias entre hibridos de maiz, en cuanto a rendimiento, digestibilidad in vitro de la materia seca (DMS) y contenido de proteina cruda (PC) de las partes del rastrojo (hoja, bractea y tallo) y olote, y determinar la correlacion entre estas caracteristicas y el rendimiento de grano. Se sembraron 25 hibridos (tres parcelas por hibrido) en Chapingo, Mexico, los cuales fueron cosechados despues de la madurez fisiologica del grano, separando las partes de la planta. En cada parte se determino DMS y PC y se estimo la varianza genetica (Vg) en proporcion de la total (Vt). Se encontraron diferencias significativas entre hibridos para diversos componentes del rendimiento del rastrojo y de las caracteristicas cualitativas estudiadas. El tallo constituyo del 40 al 57 porciento del rastrojo, la bractea del 6 al 20 porciento y la hoja del 31 al 44 porciento. La hoja fue la parte con mayor contenido de PC y la bractea resulto la parte mas digestible del rastrojo, aunque su contenido de PC fue menor que el de la hoja y que el del olote. Hubo diferencias significativas entre hibridos en cuanto a la DMS de tallo y olote. En produccion de materia seca digestible por planta solo hubo diferencias en tallo.
