Study of Khari disease in buffaloes of Baitadi and Dharchula district of Nepal

Khari disease is also known as Chaukhuri or Dhulkhule locally. It is a serious disease of only milch buffaloes. The disease is apparently not seen during rainy season when there is ample lush green grass and pasture and morbidity is reported to be high compared to mortality as reported by farmers. Khari disease have been reported from fourteen village development committees of Baitadi District Sidheswor, Sidhapur, Silanga, Gujar, Sukeli, Bhumeswor, Durgasthan, Bomandung, Khalanga, Dasarathchand, Pahada, Bhurul Gaon, Badada and Barkurali. Most of the sick buffaloes showed skin lesions and presence of heavy nits infestation. Blood smear examination did not reveal any blood parasites however there were eosinophilia and monocytosis. Examination of skin scrapings revealed presence of Psoroptic mange mites. Serum samples from sick buffaloes revealed calcium, phosphorus and magnesium to be in normal range. Experimental infection in three buffaloes with blood and skin scrapings showed only the development of skin lesions during first four months and became normal after five months of inoculation/application.
