Preliminary studies on the adaptability and performance of Colombian maize cultivars in Oman

113 cultivars of corn (Zea mays L.) originating from Colombia were tested for adaptability and performance in the College of Agriculture farm, Sultan Qaboos University, Sultanate of Oman. Of these, one variety failed to germinate completely. From the performance of the remaining 112 varieties, four populations were recognised on the basis of normal and brachitic (dwarf) plants and early and late varieties (based on silking time). Population 1, Early normal gave the highest mean ear weight of 159.85 gm/plant, followed by population 3, Early brachitic. Both late populations 2 and 4 gave a mean ear weight of about 105.84 gm and 107.51 gm respectively. But both of these populations had lower mean moisture content in kernel at harvest time than the early populations.
