Impact of nitrogenous fertilizers and their time of application on the yield of seed cotton

To observe the effect of various nitrogenous fertilizers and their time of application on seed cotton yield, a field experiment was conducted during the Kharif 1988 and 1989 at Latif Experimental Farm, Sindh Agriculture University, Tandojam. The experiment was laid out in a complete randomized block design with factorial arrangements having three replications. Three nitrogenous fertilizers viz. ammonium sulphate, ammonium nitrate and urea and three timings of their application were tried. Cotton seed of variety Qalandri (N-59-1) was drilled in rows at the rate of 30 kg per hectare. The soil used was silty loam in texture, calcareous in nature and was deficient in organic matter as well as in nitrogen. The crop was fertilized at the rate of 150 kg N/ha at three stages of growth. The various observations recorded revealed that plant height, number of branches, number of bolls, seed cotton yield per plant and yield per hectare were non significantly affected by various nitrogenous sources but these characteristics differed significantly in relation to times of nitrogen application. Among different kinds of nitrogen fertilizers, ammonium sulphate gave highest seed cotton yield per hectare. So far as the time of application was concerned, nitrogen irrespective of its sources, when given half at sowing and remaining half at pre-flowering stage produced the maximum yield per hectare i.e. 2646.30 kg. Thus, it is concluded that split application of nitrogen was better than when added in single dose.
