An extensive survey of the apple nurseries growing in Swat Valley was carried out to identify the causal organisms of apple root rot complex. Specimens were collected from the Standard, MM-106 and MM-111 root-stocks. Fungi commonly encountered and identified were Phytophthora cactorum, Phytophthora spp., Rhizoctonia solani, and Sclerotium rolfsii. Frequencies of incidence of these fungi were 66%, 6%, 0% and 23%, respectively on standard root-stock; 60%, 11%, 22% and 7%, respectively on MM-106 root-stock; and 49%, 2%, 31% and 18%, respectively and on MM-111 root-stock. All the tested root-stocks were susceptible except the Standard root-stock which was tolerant to Rizoctonia solani. S. rolfsii was highly virulent than the other fungi when artificially inoculated on excised apple twigs.
