Studies on the growth and nodulation in some kharif legumes and their effects on soil properties

A field experiment was undertaken at the Faculty of Agriculture, D.1. Khan to study the growth and nodulation in some kharif legumes viz, Soyabean, Ricebean, Pigeon Pea and Mashbean and their effect on various soil properties. Recommended dose of P and K (80 P2O5 and 50 Kg K2O/ha) and N as a starter was applied at the rate of 24 kg N/ha. Data were collected on various parameters like nodulation, number of plants m-2, shoot/root, ratio of fresh and dry plants, number of pods/plant, number of grains/pod, biological yield, grain yield and soil properties before sowing and after harvest of legumes. All the legumes had a fairly normal growth and yield, except soybean which had a poor growth. The nodule formation was negligible in all the legumes which may be to high temperature, pH or presence of poor rhizobium substrate in the soil. Some beneficial changes, in the soil properties like a slight increase in organic matter content (from 0.72 to 1.08%), infiltration rate (from 1.5 to 1.6 cm/h) and a decrease in soil pH (from 8.2 to 8.00) were noted. There was no effect on the percent total soil nitrogen, however, the content of available P in the soil decreased. The available K content of soil in some of the plots increased (Mungbean, Mashbean) while in others it decreased (Soyabean, Ricebean and Pigeon Pea) after harvest of legumes.
