Effects of saline-sodic soils on mineral composition of eight wheats under field conditions

Field investigations were conducted to evaluate the effect of soil salinity/sodicity on the mineral composition of eight cultivars of wheat (Punjab-81, Koh-83, Faisal-83, LU-26S, Blue Silver, WL-711, Bahawalpur-79 and Pari -73). The soil was calcareous/saline-sodic and texture ranged from silt to clay loam. The salts ranged from ECe of 2 and ESP 10 to ECe 32 and ESP 55. The treatments were arranged in complete randomized factorial design. The results show that sodium, calcium and magnesium content increased in the wheat grains as salinity/sodicity increased. In salt tolerant cultivars (LU-26S, Blue Silver, WL-711) accumulation of sodium was lower than the sensitive cultivars (Koh-83, Pari-73 and Bahawalpur-79). However, potassium content in grains decreased by increasing salt levels. Salt tolerant cultivars maintained relatively higher potassium levels in the grain than the salt sensitive ones. The number of spikelets per spike, 1000 grain weight, straw and grain yield decreased significantly with the increment of salinity/sodicity levels. At the highest sodicity/salinity levels, cultivars WL-711, LU-26S, Blue Silver and Bahawalpur-79 showed better performance.
