Management of bacterial wilt (Pseudomonas solanacearum E.F. Smith) in potato (Solanum tuberosum Linn.)

One survey and four laboratory and greenhouse studies were conducted to determine the extent of bacterial wilt (BW) infections in potato growing areas in the Philippines, and to explore ways of controlling the disease. The results showed that: 1.) BW is widespread in the highland- and lowland- potato production areas of the country, 2.) organic fertilizer reduced the population of Pseudomonas solanacearum by 53-78 percent 90 days after application, 3.) 40 kg N/ha + 13.3 - 20 t lime/ha, or 20 kg N/ha + 16-20 t lime/ha were effective in controlling BW, 4.) formaldehyde was not consistently effective in controlling BW, 5.) powdered bleach and alum have a potential for controlling BW, 6.) the use of antagonistic bacteria isolated from corn rhizosphere gave a control effect which was at par with Bacillus sp., and 7.) extracts from garlic and chive were found to have bactericidal effect on P. solanacearum
