Selection of nesting sites by different mason bee species (Osmia L. sensu late - Hymenoptera, Megachilidae) and nest dimensions of O. coerulescens (L.)

Osmia coerulescens selected most willingly the nesting canals of 4.5-5 mm diameter and 9-17 cm length - in drilled twigs of elder, hazel and maple. The remaining investigated mason bee species settled canals in drilled linden blocks and in the cane, and they selected: Metallinella brevicornis (F.) - the nesting canals of 5-6 mm diameter and of 10-16 cm length, Hoplitis adunca (Panz.) - of 6-7 mm diameter and of 15-22 cm length, but Osmia rufa (L.) - of 7 mm diameter and of 9-12 cm length. Dimensions of the nests and cocoons of O. coerulescens were also stated. All these mason bees may have an importance in pollination of cultivated crops and they can be artificially reared
