Dairy and beef cattle production is practically an integral part of the Thai agricultural sector. Production is mainly in the hands of smallholders. Beef cattle production is mainly in the rainfed areas under extensive livestock-crop farming system. Beef cattle fattening and dairy production are rather new technologies to Thai farmers. The main objective of cattle production is for import substitution. Sources of feed for the cattle are crop byproducts and forage crops. Extension strategies to increase production depend on the smallholder farming systems, availability of feed resources, as well as government policies. Extension projects and programs of the government at present to support the farmers involve artificial insemination services, training, new technologies, marketing support and providing soft loan services
