Soil-plant-animal relationships in the Copsa Mica area polluted with heavy metals [Romania]

Heavy metals emitted in atmosphere by Copsa Mica Non-Ferrous Metallurgical Enterprises caused a high loading with Pb, Cd and Zn in soils. Soluble forms of these elements, existing in pasture soils, exceed the maximum allowed limits up to 3.5 times for Cd, 10.5 times for Pb and 3.8 for Zn. Grasses from these pastures accumulated heavy metals both by passive physiological uptake and deposition of particulates on leaves. Thus, Pb contents were 16.8 times higher than the normal rate. Grazing of such grasses damaged especially the health of cattle and horses, causing numerous saturnism and marasmus diseases, and also toxico-defficient syndrome with a high rate of mortality incidence.
