Rhizomania - new disease of sugar beet in Slovenia

Rhizomania is new and severe disease of sugar beet in Slovenia, caused by Beet necrotic yellow vein virus (BNYVV). First symptom of this sugar beet disease was found in 1995 in the area of Sela near Ptuj. Serologic analysis (ELISA test), done at Agronomic Faculty in Keszthely, showed the presence of BNYVV virus in sugar beet roots from above mentioned area. The disease carrier is fungus Polymixa betae. Rhizomania was first discovered in Italy as early as 1954, but nowadays it is spread in most European countries. Infection has a detrimental effect, which decreases root yields for 30% to 50%, while sugar content is often lowed to approximately 10 %. Efficient control method have not been found yet. On extremely infected soils the disease is still breaking out after 8 days period. Sowing of resistant varieties to rhizomania is the only economic solution in infected regions. Samples of sugar beet roots from fields, where symptoms, typical for rhizomania were spoted, will be analysed in 1996 with the view of establishing the infection of Slovenian cultivated area with BNYVV virus. In 1996 4 cultivars of sugar beet were exposed to natural infection in order to determine the resistant cultivar with highest yield and sugar content on infected grounds in Slovenia.
