Comparison of the mineral composition of antlers of selected deer species

In successive series of antler sheds of fallow deer, sika deer and some samples taken from the antlers of other deer species the content of ash in mg per cubic cm, of dry matter, in mg per cubic cm of ash im mg per g TPS, Ca, P, Mg, Na in g per kg and Zn in mg per kg was determined. The results were compared with the contents of basic osteotrophic elements in antler sheds of European red deer (Hanzal 1989). In the analysis of fallow deer and sika deer antlers it was established that the content of observed elements changes with age. In addition, differences were found beween the evaluated series of antler sheds of various species. It was observed that fallow deer antlers are less mineralized than the antlers of red deer though the content of basic structural elements is similar. Higher mineralization in sika deer and elk antlers was observed as well when compared to other deer species and confirmed by results from the analyses of the macrostructure of antlers (Hanza 1989). Antler analyses of whitetail deer have a more informative character and cannot be used for peremptory conclusions. But certain differences were found for both subspecies and other deer species. The results of the analyses may be used as a basic material for comparison in diagnosing the state of physical condition of game and controlling the mineral composition of antlers
