Influence of season and system of milking on milk quality and mammary gland health

The influence of season and various ways of milking on health of the mammary gland were studied, and the quality of milk milked with various technologies was monitored. 200 dairy cows were milked either on stand into the pipes (A) or in a herring-bone parlour (B) during the following seasons: I (February-March), II (April-May), III (June-August), IV (September-November). The highest somatic cell count (SCC) was noticed during the winter and spring periods. Better results were obtained in the milking parlour, where lower SCC were noticed. The tendencies in chloride content (Table I) were the same. Fat content was 3.89 - 5.15 g per 100 g milk. Decrease in fat content during the summer period and subsequent increase in autumn are obvious from Table II. The values of lactose were 4.43 - 4.78 g per 100 g milk. Lactose content decreased during the summer and autum periods but the method of milking did not influence it. The content of urea changed significantly during the year (11.83 mg per 100 g milk with milking in parlour or 14.74 mg with milking on stand during the winter period). The highest values were achieved during the summer period (20.65 or 27.63 mg per 100 g). The composition of the feed ration caused these changes over the year. The season and method of milking did influence the health of the mammary gland. These findings were confirmed by the somatic cell count and chloride content in milk.
