Principal components of important selected traits of the slaughter pigs

Four economically important traits: feed consumption (kg), average daily gain (grams), backfat thickness (cm), and lean meat percentage (%) were analysed by principal component analysis. Principal components were estimated on the basis of between and "within" genotype correlation matrices. Fifteen genotypes (pure breeds: White Improved - WI, White Meaty - WM, Slovak Landrace - SL, Belgian Landrace - BL, German Landrace - GL, Duroc - DU; two breed crosses; WIWM, WMWI, WISL, SLWI, BLDU, DUBL, GLDU, F2 and F3 generations of the "synthetic" line) were analysed. Principal component analysis showed that first two principal components explained 97 % of total genotype variability, and 70 % of the total "within" genotype variability. The first principal component was characterized by the high negative correlation in food consumption and backfat thickness as well as a positive component correlation in lean meat percentage. The component score of the first two principal components resulted in the following order of genotype: 1. BL, 2. GLDU, 3. GL, 4. F3, 5. BLDU, 6. F2, 7. DU, 8. DUBL, 9.-10. WIWM and WMWI, 11. WI, 12. WM, 13.-14. SL and SLWI, and 15. WISL.
