The number of animal species in Suriname Is probably very large. It cannot be said with certainty how many species there are because only a very small part of the invertebrates have been studied. In this paper a table has been included from which conclusions regarding the number and the composition of the Surinamese fauna can be drawn. On the basis of a case study of stingless bees of Suriname some aspects of biodiversity of invertebrates are discussed. From the table it can also be concluded that the vertebrates have been studied relatively well. The economic potential, the use of animal species and the threats they face, which can lead to a decrease of the zoological diversity are also discussed. Suriname is part of some laws and international treaties, also mentioned in this paper, to protect the local fauna. However in the areas of chemical and genetic prospecting there are as yet no laws as recommended in the Convention on Biological Diversity. Suriname also lacks intellectual property rights of biodiversity and its use. Finally recommendations are made to give biodiversity more popularity and to stimulate the research and preservation of biodiversity
