Breeding (Single, Three-Way and Double Crosses) of baby corn (Zea mays L.) hybrids

Ten inbred lines from three sources of germplasms: four from Suwan 2 (SW 2(S)C7), three from Rangsit 1 (RS 1(H)C1) and three from Kasetsart inbred (Ki), were diallel crossed to produce 45 single crosses. They were planted for primary yield trial in 1992 dry and early rainy seasons. The twenty best three-way and double crosses predicted using good ear weight data were planted again for yield trial in 1993 dry season using a 8x8 triple lattice design. The experimental result revealed that good ear weight was controlled by both additive and non-additive gene action and that the additive gene played a more important role than the other. SW 2(S)C7-F2-S6-28 (no.6) and Ki 28 (no.10) were high in general combining ability. Criteria in selection hybrids were based on good ear weight yeild, more than 90 % downy mildew resistance, and high specific combining ability. The single crosses showed that 6x10 produced the highest average yield of 198 kg/rai, or 354 % relative to Suwan 2(S)C7 the check variety (average for three seasons). The top three-way and double crosses grown in 1993 dry season were TX (5x6) 10 and DX(6x10) (7x9) producing the highest yields of 142 and 113 kg/rai, respectively, or 418 and 332 % relative to Suwan 2 (S) C7 (in 1993 dry season).
