Capacity of Bacillus spp. for the control of Fusarium moniliforme Sheldon, root and stem rot disease of sugarcane

Total number of bacteria and aerobic spore forming bacilli, actinomycetes and fungi were fluctuated between 9.7x10(** (4)-7.5x10(** (6), 3.5x10(** (3)-9.3x10(** (5), 6.0x10(** (3)-7.1x10(** (5) and 4.9x10(** (3)-1.0x10(** (5) cfu/g of soil from field, respectively. The number of aerobic spore formers varied between 3.6-12.4 percent of the total of bacterial number. The depth, moisture content and pH of the soil did not affect the microbial number. Systemic identification of 127 isolates of areobic spore forming bacilli revealed that they were B. brevis, B. cereus, B. coagulans, B. firmus, B. licheniformis, B. macerans, B. megaterium, B. polymyxa, B. pumilus, B. sphaericus and B. subtilis. Interestingly, 127 isolates comprised 40.9 percent of B. firmus and 18.9 percent of B. brevis, B. cereus, B. licheniformis, B. macerans and B. subtilis showed appreciable inhibition of Fusarium moniliforme Sheldon in vitro. However, B. cereus NKS2.4 was the best antagonist of the mold. It produced water soluble toxin to inhibit the mold growth. The toxin altered cultural and morphological characteristics of the mold.
