Study of lead, mercury, cadmium and arsenic contents in leachate from garbage compost pile of Phetchaburi Municipal, Changwat Phetchaburi was conducted using 5 treatments and each treatment was experimented in 3 replicates. Treatment A was for naturally composting garbage, treatment B for sorted garbage spread over with composting agents, treatment C for sorted garbage mixed with compositing agents, treatment D for non-sorted garbage spread over with composting agents and treatment E for non-sorted garbage mixed with composting agents. Composting period lasted for 3 months. Composted garbage samples were collected in November and December 1992 and in January and February 1993 for laboratory analysis to determine lead, mercury, cadmium and arsenic content. Lead , mercury and cadmium content in the leachate through the 3-month period were in the range of 0.022-0.453 mg/l, 0.025-25.580 micro g/l and 0.003-0.036 mg/l, respectively and they were on the declining trend. The arsenic content, meanwhile, ranged from 0.005-0.097 mg/l and trend was slightly on increase. However, the total content of lead, mercury, cadmium and arsenic in the leachate did not exceed the Ministry of Industry's Industrial Effluent Standard and each treatment of composting process yielded non significant differences in lead, mercury, cadmium and arsenic contents in the leachate, therefore any treatment may be chosen with other supporting factors.
