Efficacy of hydrated sodium calcium aluminosilicate (NovaSil) on bioavailability of aflatoxin in the ducks

Ducklings have been used extensively for screening the toxigenicity of fungal isolate but litte has been published on mycotoxicoses when compared to other farm animals. The most common mycotoxins found in South East Asia are aflatoxin. The objective of this study was to evaluate bioavailability of hydrated sodium calcium aluminosilicate (HSCAS) added to three basal duck diets, containing pathree levels of aflatoxin (30, 60 and 120 ppb), at levels of 0.25 and 0.5 % of final diet. Inclusion of HSCAS to the three basal diets resulted in a significant (P.05) decrease in mortality and improvement in feed efficiency, liver lipid metabolism (decrease in liver lipid), feather growth (protein metabolism), leg-deformity (mineral metabolism), webs toes pigmentation and hemorrage (increase absorption of carotenoid and decreased fragile bones). Three basal diets (containing 30, 60, 120 ppb aflatoxin) resulted in a significant effects (P.05) on mortality, body weight gain, feed efficiency, liver lipid content, feather growth, leg-deformity, webs toes pigmentation and webs toes hemorrage. HSCAS is a high affinity sorbent or binding aflatoxin which can significantly decrease the toxicity of aflatoxin perhaps reduce bioavailability of aflatoxin in the GI tract. Added HSCAS appears to be advantageous to the expansion of duck production.
