Improved control of anaplasmosis and babesiosis through biotechnology

Ultimate objective of the project is to utilize biotechnology to develop subunit vaccines which are cost-effective and highly efficacious under field conditions in tropical regions of the world. The successful testing and deployment of improved vaccines will require accurate determination of epidemiological parameters and consequently, another objective of the project is the development of highly sensitive and specific diagnostic methods, with special emphasis on subunit enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays and nucleic-acid probes. These diagnostic tests will be used in epidemiological surveys in Thailand and elsewhere to determine the dynamics of Anaplasma marginale, Babesia bigemina and B. bovis infections in cattle and buffaloes and in vector ticks. Data collected during these surveys, as well as from controlled experiments, will be used to estimate the economic impact of anaplasmosis and babesiosis on cattle and buffalo productivity and eventually to determine the cost-effectiveness of the improved vaccines developed by the project.
