Effect of defoliation and harvesting time on seed yield and quality of ruzi grass (Brachiaria ruziziensis)

Study the effect of defoliation and harvesting time on yield and quality of ruzi grass seeds. The highest seed was found at 45 days defoliation followed by 60 and 90 days, respectively. Harvesting by daily shaking of seedhead gave higher yield than the cutting of seedhead. Pure seed yields from the daily shaking of seedhead were 55.5, 50.4 and 43.6 kg/rai (1 rai=1,600 square m) those equivalented to 38.3, 39.8 and 34.0 kg/rai of pure germinating seed yield for the 45, 60 and 90 days of the defoliation times, respectively. There were interactions between defoliation times and harvesting times on seed yield. In order to obtain high seed yield, an earlier defoliation must be followed by a later cutting of seedhead, inversely, a later defoliation must be followed by an earlier cutting of seedhead. The highest pure seed yields of 49.5, 47.3 and 36.7 kg/rai or the equivalent to 39.1, 35.5 and 29.7 kg/rai of pure germinating seed yields were obtained when defoliation and cutting of seedhead were done at 45, 60 and 90 days and 25, 15 and 10 days, respectively. Forage dry matter yields of 518, 1026 and 900 kg/rai with an average crude protein content of 11.6, 7.2 and 5.9 (second cut) % DM. were obtained from the defoliation times of 45, 60 and 90 (45+45) days, respectively
