Conventional technique of breeding giant tiger prawn larva is eyestalk ablation technique. The technique has major drawbacks namely, the unpredicable production yield and continuous utilizing of the female broodstocks obtianed from natural habitat. Various approaches have been tried to solve the problems but until now, there is still no other acceptable procedure of inducing ovary maturation in the prawn obtained from natural habitat or pond. However, prior to under-take any approach the basic knowledge of oogenesis must be clarified. Thus, this study is aimed to investigate the detailed development of oocyte in the ovary of female broodstocks at the stage I to IV. Twenty female broodstocks of four stages, five for each stage, were obtained from the Gulf of Thailand, pieces of ovary were dissected out from four different positions of the ovary. The ovaries were processed for parafin sectioning and hematoxylin and eosin staining. It was found that the stage I ovary consists of mainly oogonia, the stem cells. Then, this cell develops to immature oocyte, early mature oocyte and ripe oocyte in the stage II, III and IV respectively. However, a quantitative number of oogonia and immature oocytes were also found in the stage IV ovary. This implies that they may be the starting cells of the next cycle of oogenesis.
