The yield of dry matter of ten alfalfa varieties was studied in the period from 1991 to 1994. In 1994, the yield of the root from 0 to 40 cm was measured and the number of plants per square meter was determined. Significant genetic correlations exist between yield of dry matter and yield of fresh root mass (r=0.854). Also, significant genetic correlations were found between the yield of dry matter and the number of plants per square meter. However, phenotypic correlations between the studied traits were not significant.
