Changes of the chemical composition during vegetation of sorghum (Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench) and Sudangrass (Sorghum sudanense Stapf.)

Two sorghum cultivars NS-Silosirak and NS-Secerac together with two sudangrass NS-Srem and NS-Zora were used to find out their yielding capacity and nutritive value when mowed at different growth stages. For that purpose the field experiment was carried out in NE Serbia (Yugoslavia), in Zajecar region, on smonitza soil and with no irrigation applied. Judging by dry matter (DM) content at early growth stages, forage sorghums and sudangrasses are more suitable as a green chop and in the subsequent stage for ensilage. In dry farming conditions forage sorghum for green chop should be mown, if higher yields are wanted, at 60-70 cm growth stage, while sudangrass, for the same purpose, at 80-90 cm stage. Growth stage over 150 cm was found, for both crops, suitable for ensiling.
