Distribution of Sorghum halepense Pers. in maize weed associations in Serbia [Yugoslavia]

The highest degree of Sorghum halepense presence was observed in plain regions with more intensive agricultural production (Pomoravlje, Vojvodina). It is probably due to continuous herbicide application and frequent perennial maize growing in monoculture. Significantly lower presence was registered in hill regions with extensive agricultural production and poor herbicide application. The weed coverage value, as a criterion of quantitative participation of Sorghum halepense, accounted for 0.04-12.88 of total perennial weed species analyzed. Sorghum halepense as a characteristic species of Chenopodietalia alba Tx., Lohm. et Persg. 1950 is equally represented in most maize weed associations described in Serbia. However, a more significant presence was discovered in the association Hibisco-Eragrostietum megastachyae Tuxen, 1950, generally encountered in warmer and drier habitats.
