Gut flora in pigs, part 2: Predominant faecal bacteria in newborn pigs with diarrhoea before and after 48 h of the treatment

Two and three day old piglets were treated for diarrhoea 48 h (from 1st to 3rd day) on: a) gentamycine sulphate 0.1 g/kg b.w. + WHO ORS (n=19), b) streptomycine sulphate 0.05 g/kg b.w. + ORS (n=15) and c) ORS alone - control group (n=25). Faecal cultures were taken before and after the treatment. In gentamycin treated group, the fall of total bacterial and Escherichia coli counts and the rise of Bacillus sp. and Enterococcus sp. counts were significant. In streptomycin treated group, findings were similar, but statistically nonsignificant. Minimal improvement in faecal cultures was found in the control group also. Better therapeutic effect of gentamycin than of streptomycin should be proved with a higher dose of the latter one. No deterioration of clinical condition in piglets of control group, suggest that early oral rehydration is important for the course of illness.
