The use of photovoltaic insect traps for the establishment of a forecast system against noctuid pests in South Portugal

In South Portugal, light trapping has revealed to be more efficient and reliable for pest noctuid monitoring than pheromon trapping due to the night birds, and bats, especially if the traps are placed in the middle of the crops. Fields are of big size and traps attract not only an important number and diversity of insects, but at the same time bats and owls. A photovoltaic trap outfit is presented, under technical point of view, indicating prototype prices, as well as results from two light trap designs working simultaneously in a tomato producing region, as to the pest noctuids Heliothis armigera, Trichoplusia orichalcea and Chrysodeixes calcites. Actually, the photovoltaic traps are located in the in middle of a wine producing area of about 560 hectares run under monoculture. Results of the trapping activities are presented
